1. The witness (sākṣī). 2. He is called upadraṣṭā because he is, by his very nature, the witness of all things — dwelling as the inner self within everything, he witnesses whatever is done. 3. Standing near the agent, he only sees the agent — he does not act himself; hence upadraṣṭā, "the witness." Therefore agency and the rest of the qualities of worldly existence never belong to the Self — as scripture says, "the witness, the sanctioner" (upadraṣṭānumantā). 4. "The puruṣa who dwells within this very body is the upadraṣṭā of the body, in that he brings about the resolve and the rest appropriate to the body's activity" (Śrī Rāmānuja) — the indwelling Self actively generates the will behind the body's engagement with the world. 5. "The seer displays all visible things through direct perception and the other means of knowledge; the upadraṣṭā, though himself uninvolved in any activity, keeps watch over what is being carried out" (Śrī Vedānta Deśika). 6. "Standing near, he sees, without engaging in any action himself — as one skilled in sacrificial procedure watches the priest and the patron perform the rite, observing their merits and faults while remaining uninvolved; so too the Self stands apart from the workings of body and senses, uninvolved in them, yet — nothing being nearer than the Self itself — sees from a position of utmost closeness, and is therefore called upadraṣṭā" (Śrī Śaṅkara) — here the Self's utter non-agency is the whole point: it witnesses everything and does nothing. 7. Upa, "near"; draṣṭā, "the seer" — one who sees from close at hand.
